Air Allergen’s Test Kit contains a device that collects dust and other materials from your carpets or rugs.  Carpet dust includes mold spores that have settled over time.  The analysis of this dust can give you a history of weeks or months, rather than the day or two provided by other Home Test Kits. In addition, Air Allergen’s test kit is not as affected as other test kits by air currents, contamination, or short term conditions.
Air Allergen’s Home Test Kit also identifies mold that can affect pets and young children playing on carpet that does not show up in air samples or a Petri dish.  Identifying carpet mold that doesn’t show up in other methods is also significant if someone in the family is immune-compromised by age, medication, medical procedure or disease.
When you return the collection device containing your carpet dust in the prepaid packaging, Air Allergen’s microbiologist analyzes the sample using three different culture plates, each with a specialized agar.  The protocol and results of this process is more likely to reveal all types of mold present and more closely aligns with the EPA developed method (ERMI) for determining the likelihood of mold related health issues in your home.
As an additional bonus, Air Allergen will include with your results an outline of typical remediation protocols as well as tips on how to maintain healthier indoor air quality.
Air Allergen’s Home Test Kit costs very little more than the purchase price and lab fees for the Home Test Kits found in stores and you can purchase the Kit without leaving your home, saving you more time and expense.

Other Home Test Kits for mold contain a Petri Dish that you expose to your indoor air.  Because mold spores are so common, almost every Petri dish will grow mold. However, the kind of mold it grows can be affected by placement and air currents, skewing the results. In some cases, Petri dishes that have not been exposed to indoor air have grown mold and given false information.

Research shows that mold requiring higher moisture is more likely to cause health concerns.  A Petri dish can dry out, favoring fungi that have low water activity levels and lower health concerns.  In addition, the material in the dish, called agar, grows some molds better than others. Molds like Stachybotrys chartarum, often referred to as the ‘Black Mold’ and feared for its toxic potential, have much less chance of growing than a spore like Cladosporium that is common in the outside air.

Some Home Mold Test Kits contain a tape lift.  While a tape lift can identify mold spores in a specific area, it is not a general test that identifies what may be affecting your health from surfaces throughout the home.
